Super-Curricular Opportunities

St Clere’s School are committed to providing a rich programme of supercurricular opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom and prepare students for future study and careers. These experiences are designed to develop independence, curiosity, and real-world skills, helping students to make informed decisions about their next steps and increasing their chances of being accepted into the top universities and apprenticeship schemes.

A key element of our provision is our strong links with local employers. We have arranged valuable work experience placements with organisations such as Tilbury Port, where students have gained first-hand insight into industry and professional environments. These opportunities have proven highly impactful, with some students being shortlisted for apprenticeship roles as a direct result of their placements.

In addition, we run a dedicated work experience week for both Year 10 and Year 12 students. These placements allow students to explore career pathways aligned with their interests, build professional networks, and develop key employability skills. In several cases, students have impressed employers to such an extent that they have been offered part-time work and even potential apprenticeship opportunities upon completing their studies.

We also actively support student-led enrichment initiatives. For example, a number of our Year 12 students are in the early stages of establishing a debating society. Driven by their interest in studying Politics at university, this initiative will not only benefit our own students but is also intended to be extended to other local schools, fostering collaboration and intellectual engagement within the wider community.

Students benefit from a wide range of employer engagement opportunities that bring learning to life and provide valuable insight into future careers. Visits to organisations such as BT and the Houses of Parliament allow students to experience professional environments and understand how different industries operate. Many of our Year 10 students have also taken part in the Mears Trade School, where they developed practical skills in areas such as plumbing, electrical work, and bricklaying. Our Sixth Form students further enhance their career awareness through talks from leading employers including Essex Police, the Bank of England, the RAF, the Civil Service, and Bouygues. They have also engaged with expert speakers, such as economist Julian Jessop, through interactive sessions that explore real-world economic issues.

Alongside structured programmes, we encourage students to take ownership of their learning by engaging with high-quality online resources. Platforms such as Coursera and virtual work experience programmes provide flexible opportunities for students to deepen their subject knowledge and develop skills relevant to their future ambitions.

Our students are also encouraged to engage with academic challenges and enrichment beyond the curriculum. This year, we have seen students submit entries to prestigious literature and politics competitions run by Oxbridge universities, demonstrating both ambition and intellectual curiosity.

To further broaden students’ perspectives, we recommend a range of academic podcasts and resources, including The Rest is Politics and The Rest is History. These help students to engage critically with current affairs and historical contexts, enriching their understanding and supporting their development as informed, independent thinkers.

Through this wide-ranging supercurricular offer, we aim to inspire students, expand their horizons, and equip them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in higher education and the world of work.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are online courses that are typically free or low-cost and accessible to anyone. They provide an excellent opportunity for students to explore subjects beyond the classroom, deepen their academic interests, and develop valuable transferable soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and time management. They look great on university applications too.
