Mathematical thinking is important for all members of a modern society for its use in the workplace, business, finance and for personal decision-making. Mathematics is fundamental to national prosperity in providing tools for understanding science, engineering, technology and economics. It is essential in public decision-making and for participation in the knowledge economy.

Mathematics is a creative discipline. The language of Mathematics is international, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics has developed over time as a means of solving problems and also for it's own sake.

GCSE Course Study Breakdown (Key Stage 4)

St Clere's Maths Mastery approach

In a mastery approach, topics are covered for a longer time than in a traditional approach, with every student expected to reach a certain level (i.e. to ‘master the curriculum’) before the class progresses on to the next topic. This means that all students get full access to the curriculum. Those who grasp a topic quickly do not move on to a new topic, ahead of their peers; instead they tackle problems where they apply their skills to unfamiliar contexts and across other areas of mathematics, helping them to see the links between them and building a breadth and depth of understanding. Those who are not so quick to grasp a topic have the opportunity to consolidate their understanding before the class progresses to the next topic. A mastery approach also places greater emphasis on students’ problem-solving skills.
