Studying a Modern Foreign language, such as French/German, enables students to become global citizens. They appreciate and understand the culture of different countries and societies by learning to communicate and comprehend the spoken and written language. They work across a diverse range of topics like family, free time, the world of education and work and the international and global dimension. Proficiency in a Modern Foreign Language opens doors to a wider range of employment opportunities in sectors such as business, finance, tourism and education.

The syllabus focuses on developing the four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Listening: skills of listening for gist and information in German.
Speaking: confidence to give information about particular topics in German for different purposes and audiences.
Reading: skills of reading for gist and extracting information from German texts.
Writing: confidence to write creatively an in-depth about certain topics in German.

(ii) Revision of the present, perfect, imperfect and future tenses. Modal and separable verbs
(iii) Free time and leisure activities, music, film and TV, sport, celebrations and festivals

Term 2:
Friendship and family relationships, weekend activities and role models

Term 3:
House and home, food and drink, going on an exchange, daily routine, a typical German meal and technology

Year 11

Term 1:
(i) Daily routine, a typical German meal and technology
(ii) Transport and booking hotels, buying train tickets, accommodation, directions, ordering in a restaurant, shopping for souvenirs and describing problems
(iii) Holidays and weather, advantages and disadvantages of different areas

Term 2:
(i) Jobs and work, job applications, ideal jobs and the role of languages
(ii) Festivals and events, the environment, international and local campaigns and the passive voice
